Note that it is currently night: Visual detection with the Mk1 Eyeball will be very poor so we will be relying on our surface search radar to detect the vessels we're looking for. </P>
<P><B><U>Radar:</U></B> Radar is a staple of surface unit operations. When operating unopposed it is typical for ships to use at least a surface search or navigation radar. Radar is an active sensor and needs to be switched on to function (F9). Your patrol boat is equipped with a navigation radar (Decca 1266), a combination air and surface-search radar (TRS 3035 Triton II MTI) and two fire-control radars (TRS 3201 Castor II and TRS 3220 Pollux). </P>
<P>Radar performance is affected by several factors, but in this tutorial we are most concerned by radar horizon. </P>
<P>The maximum range of a radar is limited by the ‘radar horizon’, which is a factor of the curvature of the earth, the altitude of the target, the altitude of the receiver, atmospheric factors, and the frequency of the radio waves. An approximation of the radar horizon formula that is useful for surface ships is <I>RNm = 1.23 sqrt(HRf + HTf)</I>—the range in nautical miles (<I>RNm</I>) is equal to the product of 1.23 and the square root of the sum of the height of the receiver in feet (<I>HRf</I>) and height of the target in feet (<I>HTf</I>). </P>
<P>Thankfully, in most situations it is sufficient to know that the typical radar horizon for a surface ship detecting another surface ship is around 12 nautical miles. </P>
<P>There are a number of other factors that come into play, but for now we just need to be aware that the typical effective range for a ship-borne surface search radar is around 12 nautical miles, and that the range for any radar is limited by the radar horizon, which in turn is determined by the altitude of the target and receiver. They are excellent at detecting contacts and determining their location, speed, heading, altitude--However, with the exception of some very high-end systems, they are unable to determine the identity of the contacts they detect. This is where passive sensors like visual, ESM and passive sonar come in. Passive sensors do not send out energy, but analyse energy that is emitted by other platforms in order to detect and classify them. Passive sensors are somewhat less effective at determining the exact position of a contact, but they are excellent at classifying and identifying contacts.</P>
<P>In this tutorial we will be using radar to detect surface contacts, and then using visual sensors to identify them. Let's take a look at the sensor types we have available:</P>
<P><B><U>Mk1 Eyeball:</U></B> All ships, aircraft, land units and submarines with a crew automatically keep a lookout using the naked eye; the Mk1 Eyeball (submarines use periscopes at periscope depth and have bridge lookouts while on the surface).</P>
<P>The ability of the Mk1 Eyeball to detect other ships, aircraft and submarines is dependent on time of day, weather, and sea state as well as the size, distance, and speed of the target platform amongst other factors.</P>
<P>Under certain conditions, the Mk1 Eyeball can make detections at very long ranges, e.g. a lookout on a surface ship can spot an aircraft many miles away if the aircraft is contrailing, or conversely a lookout in an aircraft may spot a ship at a very long distance if the ship is leaving a wake. Both of these specific situations, and many others, are modelled in Command.</P>
<P><B><U>Magnified Optics / Electro-Optical (EO):</U></B> The most basic magnified optic sensor is the binoculars, allowing detection, classification and identification of contacts at longer ranges than the Mk1 Eyeball, without improving the ability to see at night, or through fog, rain or smoke. EO sensors include television (TV) cameras, and charge-coupled devices (CCD). There are a variety of these sensors in the Command database, each with their own characteristics. Some are great at searching, some are great at classifying contacts detected with other sensors, and some are good at both.</P>
<P><B><U>Low Light Level TV (LLTV) / Night Vision Goggles (NVG):</U></B> LLTV and NVG sensors amplify existing light to produce an image that is visible to the human eye. NVGs are typically used on smaller platforms such as tactical aircraft, land units or small boats and allow improved detection and classification of contacts under low light conditions. LLTV sensors usually include a degree of magnification and are often found on ships and larger aircraft.</P>
<P><B><U>Infra-Red (IR):</U></B> IR sensors detect heat, allowing them to detect contacts irrespective of ambient light level. IR sensors are able to effectively see through smoke, fog and precipitation--although thick smoke or precipitation may reduce detection range. IR sensors are excellent for searching for surface ships as the heat they emit makes them stand out clearly from the cold of the ocean; for the same reason, IR sensors are also able to detect snorkelling submarines at long range.</P>
<P><B><U>Laser:</U></B> Laser sensors are not used to search for contacts (although a laser-warning receiver [LWR] can detect the presence of laser energy), but they are very useful for determining the precise range to a contact detected by other sensors, or designating (also known as 'painting') targets for laser-guided weapons.</P>
<P>Your patrol boat is equipped with LLTV and IR cameras and a laser range-finder. Your helicopter is also equipped with FLIR, CCD/LLTV and a laser ranger/designator, while your RHIBs are equipped with NVGs.</P>
<P>Now, we'll close in with the helicopter to identify the detected contact. Set a course for your helicopter towards the detected contact (F3), and set the altitude (F2) to 2,000ft and the speed to Cruise.</P></BODY>

<P>Select your patrol boat, press F1 to order an automatic attack and then click on the pirate vessel. Your patrol boat will automatically move towards the pirate vessel and engage when it comes into weapons range.</P>
<P>You can leave your helicopter or boats in the vicinity of the pirate vessel to track their position while waiting for the patrol boat to close, or order them to return to the patrol boat by pressing the B key. <P>Your destroyer is currently operating its AN/SPS-49(V)5 NTU radar. The designation of this radar follows the <I>Joint Electronics Type Designation System</I> nomenclature, with the SPS component of the designation denoting the radar is a surface ship search radar. NTU stands for 'new threat upgrade' and refers to an upgrade program undertaken in the late 80's. The SPS-49(V)5 is a 2D search radar, meaning it is able to give range and bearing information but not altitude information, and operates in the C band allowing it to detect aircraft at long range at the expense of a less precise detection.</P>

<P>We're able to maintain contact with the aircraft because we are detecting its radar emissions with our electronic support measures (ESM) equipment. ESM is a passive sensor type that is automatically activated and does not need to be switched on or off. Incoming radar or other emissions are detected and analysed, which depending on the capabilities of the specific ESM set can give a bearing estimate, range estimate, and in this case, specific identification of the emitter--note that after a minute or so of ESM contact we are able to identify the air contact as a Tu-95RT Bear D, a common maritime patrol and reconaissance aircraft with a powerful long range surface search radar.</P>
<P>ESM detections can be made well beyond the maximum range of an emitting radar. Radar sends out radio energy and detects contacts based on their reflection of that energy, but an ESM set only needs to detect the radiated energy--the detected energy doesn't have to be powerful enough to send a reflection for the ESM set to know that there is a contact out there. This is a very important fundamental principle of modern naval and air warfare, and is the main reason why most aircraft and ships prefer to remain EMCON silent (EMCON stands for EMissions CONtrol; EMCON silent means no active emissions) where possible to avoid giving away their presence, identity and location.</P>
<P>Another important concept is that radar energy is directional. Select the air contact and click on 'Contact Report' in the right hand status bar. The omni-directional surface search radar is detected approximately every 10 seconds as it sweeps our destroyer, but the directional Box Tail [PRS-4 Krypton] Tail Warning Radar is only detected when the aircraft is flying away from us. Note that it is detectable even at over 100nm away, despite having an effective range of approximately 10nm--and this is for a relatively weak tail radar!</P>
<P>Now, we know that we are well within detection range for the Bear D's surface search radar, and we have already been emitting our air search radars. It is practically certain that we have been detected, that our identity has been deduced from our radar emissions, and our position has been determined precisely by the Bear D's surface search radar. We also know that for the purposes of our air warfare exercise that we will soon have incoming air threats, so in this tactical situation we will be better served by the situational awareness that our radars give us than the potential to be more stealthy by leaving them off.</P>

In the real world, rules of engagement are clearly defined and usually very prescriptive. In Command, it is up to the scenario designer to give the player rules of engagement and determine whether they should be penalised for shooting indiscriminately or not.</P>
<P>In the absence of any specific direction from the scenario designer, the following are useful criteria for assessing the threat posed by an unidentified air contact--easily recalled using the mnemonic CRASH:</P>
<UL>
<LI><B>Consorts</B>: A lone aircraft is less likely to be a threat than a group of aircraft moving in formation</LI>
<LI><B>Radiation</B>: Radar or other emissions (e.g. OECM) can give information as to the possible identity and intentions of detected aircraft; detecting a fire-control radar is cause for immediate alarm.</LI>
<LI><B>Altitude</B>: Aircraft that are ascending or at high altitude are less threatening than aircraft that are descending or travelling at low altitude</LI>
<LI><B>Speed</B>: Aircraft travelling at slow speed are less likely to be a threat than aircraft travelling at high speed. Supersonic aircraft are nearly always cause for concern.</LI>
<LI><B>Heading</B>: Aircraft heading away from your units are less threatening than aircraft headed directly towards your units</LI></UL>
<P>Use the above criteria to evaluate air contacts as threats or non-threats in this scenario. For now, we will leave the specifics of any engagments to the AI crew: to order the crew to shoot down an air contact, select your destroyer, press F1 to order an automatic attack and click on the relevant contact. It will be designated hostile, and the crew will open fire with the most appropriate weapon when the contact enters engagement paramaters.</P>
<P>You will be presented with 6 target drones flying at various altitudes towards your ship. Note that all of these drones start an equal distance from your ship and are travelling at the same speed. Because they are flying at different altitudes, your radar will detect them at different times due to the radar horizon. Drones operating at high altitude will be detected at maximum range, while drones flying at minimum altitude will appear on your tactical map at an uncomfortably close range!</P>
<P>Using the F1 auto attack command (or the Shift-F1 manual attack command if you wish), destroy the two highest-flying drones with SM-2 missiles. <B>Do not use SM-2s to engage any drones under 10,000ft; wasting your missiles on these lower flying drones will mean you will not be able to shoot down the high flying drones.</B> We will engage the lower-flying drones with guns and close-in weapons systems (CIWS)</P></BODY>

If you have been following instructions, they were the two high flying drones (>5,000ft).</p><p>Take a moment to check the arcs of your guns and CIWS mounts by selecting your destroyer, bringing up the Weapons dialog (F8) and checking the 'Show Arcs' box next to the entries for 127mm/54 Mk45 Mod 2 and 20mm/85 Mk15 Phalanx Blk 1 CIWS. Note that one gun covers the forward arc, one gun covers the rear, one CIWS covers the starboard bow and the other covers the port quarter.</p><p>For targets outside 5nm it is assumed that the crew perform whatever manoeuvres are necessary to 'unmask' your weapons and these arcs are not taken into consideration. Within 5nm, however, weapons are only able to engage targets within their arcs. Your destroyer is designed to have 360 degree coverage from at least one each of its gun and CIWS mounts, however you can bring the most weapons to bear on targets off the port or starboard waist (2 x 127mm guns and 1 x 20mm CIWS). In this training scenario it is best to turn your ship so that it is presenting a broadside to the incoming threat when preparing to engage a target inside 5nm. When responding to air threats in a non-training environment it may be better to turn head-on to the threat to minimise the radar cross section of your ship. By default, the AI will handle manoeuvring for you while you concentrate on other things.</p><p>While we have the Weapons dialog open, note that there are three types of ammunition in your magazines for the 127mm guns: HE-CVT, HE-PD and WP--acronyms for High Explosive-Controlled Variable Time, High Explosive-Point Detonating and White Phosphorous respectively. For anti-air engagements, we want HE-CVT which is loaded by default (incoming air threats is not the time to be switching ammo types!). HE-PD is more effective against surface vessels and shore targets, while WP is effective as an incendiary against soft targets.</p><p>Unlike the cannons of the age of sail, our ships 127mm guns are rapid firing, accurate, and can be guided by a variety of radars and electro-optical sensors aboard our destroyer. The Phalanx 20mm CIWS is even more capable against air targets, and since it is able to operate autonomously it has no OODA delay: a huge advantage when dealing with sea-skimming anti-ship missiles travelling at Mach 2+! Like the illumination required to direct your SM-2 missiles to their targets, fire-control sensor activation is taken care of automatically by your crew and requires no action from you.</p><p>Remember to manoeuvre to unmask both guns if possible. Note the OODA delay present when using missiles and guns: OODA stands for Observe, Orient, Decide and Act and is the time taken for your crew to organise their response to a detected contact. The Phalanx CIWS operate autonomously and therefore ignore the OODA delay, which when combined with their potent anti-air capability make them very effective for missile defence.</p><p>The final line of defence are decoys. Our destroyer is equipped with Mk36 SRBOC (super rapid-blooming offboard chaff) launchers that are also able to launch flares, as well as a Nixie towed torpedo decoy. Decoys are automatically deployed by the crew, and in this case all decoys also operate autonomously and therefore ignore the OODA delay. The effect of decoys is determined as part of the <i>Weapon Endgame Calculations</i>. To see these calculations, enable them in the Game > Game Options > Message Log settings and view the message log entries--note that since we are not defending against live missiles in this training exercise, decoys will not be deployed.</p><p>Prepare to engage low-flying target drones closing on your ship. Manouevre to expose your weapons, and allocate your guns and CIWS with manual (Shift+F1) or automatic (F1) attacks to destroy them.</p>

<P>Your frigate is equipped with a AN/SQS-26CX Hull Sonar; the bleeding edge of sonar technology when it was first introduced in the 1960's. The SQS-26CX is capable of operating in passive mode and active mode. Passive mode is always operating, there is no action required from the player. Active mode needs to be turned on in the sensors dialog (F9) or in the EMCON section of the right hand status bar.</P>
<P>Active sonar is very much like radar in that it sends out energy--in this case sound energy--and analyses the returned energy that is reflected off objects in order to make detections. Like radar, active sonar is also not generally able to determine the identity of an object--merely its presence and location. A corollary of this is that using active sonar also gives away your presence, as well as possibly your location and identity in much the same way that using radar does.</P>
<P>Passive sonar simply listens to sounds in the water and analyses their characteristics to detect and identify contacts. With enough sound data contacts can be identified right down to individual vessels within a class, and if the contact is held for long enough a good estimation of position can be made. Unlike active sonar, the use of passive sonar gives no outward indication that can be detected by other platforms.</P>
<P>Sonar in both its active and passive forms is affected by external noise, the most important factor contributing to external noise is the speed of the platform the sonar sensor is attached to. For surface ships, passive sonar is of minimal use above about 5 knots. Active sonar can still make detections at speeds up to around 20 knots but the range at which objects are detected is reduced markedly as speed increases.</P>

<P>If you have been following instructions, this will be a passive sonar contact detected by the SQS-26CX hull sonar.</P>
<P>Note that there is an area of ambiguity around the contact, and that we do not have depth information for the contact. Since passive sonar uses target motion analysis to deduce the position of contacts it is normal to have some ambiguity about the position--the noisier the contact and the better the sonar sensor, the less ambiguity will exist and vice-versa.</P>
<P>Now switch on active sonar by checking the 'active' box next to the entry for the SQS-26CX in the sensors dialog (F9) or by changing unit EMCON settings in the right hand side status bar. Note that the area of ambiguity disappears after a few seconds and we now have a firm position for the contact.</P>
<P>As mentioned earlier, the contact is an old obsolete submarine that has had its weapons and sensors removed--it's harmless. Close in until you have a type classification on the contact. Try different speeds and turning the active sonar on and off to see some of the factors that determine whether a contact is able to be tracked.</P></BODY>

<P>Submarines have either nuclear or conventional propulsion, and their roles can be broadly defined as strategic strike (e.g. nuclear ballistic missiles or high volumes of conventional cruise missiles) or tactical (e.g. nuclear attack submarines, diesel patrol submarines).</P>
<P>Nuclear submarines are much faster--with some reaching in excess of 35 knots at flank speed--and have essentially unlimited range, but are typically larger and have a higher baseline level of noise from reactor pumps and other support systems which cannot be turned off. A major advantage of nuclear powered submarines is that they can remain submerged indefinitely, as they produce their own oxygen to support the crew and have no need to recharge batteries using diesel engines.</P>
<P>Diesel (also called conventional) submarines are much slower than nuclear submarines and are limited in their range by the amount of fuel they can carry. When operating on the surface or 'snorkelling' at periscope depth, conventional submarines use their diesel engines to recharge an array of batteries that power the submarine when it is completely submerged. Running the diesel engines is noisy, and the exhaust plume from the snorkel can be detected from quite a distance by aircraft with infra-red sensors. When running on battery power, however, a conventional submarine is extremely quiet and therefore very difficult to detect. This, combined with their small size and low cost makes conventional submarines a popular choice for many of the world's navies.</P>
<P>Continue to close with the submarine and hold contact until you are able to make a positive identification with passive sonar.</P></BODY>

<P>Most modern warships are equipped with over-the-side torpedo launchers stocked with light-weight torpedoes. These are the same torpedoes that are dropped from aircraft--they have a limited range and relatively small warhead compared to the heavy-weight torpedoes carried by submarines.</P>
<P>Outside of this training scenario, <B>closing with a submarine with the intention to attack it using light-weight torpedoes fired from a surface ship is not recommended.</B></P>
<P>Against modern submarines with wire guided torpedoes, these light-weight torpedoes are little more than self-defence weapons. The most common use of these over-the-side launchers is to fire a snap shot down the bearing of a detected incoming torpedo before commencing evasive manoeuvres. The chances of destroying the submarine are slim, but the possibility of forcing the submarine to break its guidance wire is quite high and this increases the ships chance to evade the torpedo.</P>
<P>With that said, the submarine we're about to engage has all sensors and weapons removed and is no threat. Engage and sink the submarine with torpedoes from your frigate. Just remember that this is not how you should be routinely engaging submarines with surface ships.</P>
<P>You may also wish to practice bearing-only launches, simulating the response from a detected incoming torpedo. Press Ctrl+F1 and click on a position within torpedo range of your ship. A weapons allocation dialog will appear with the position as the target; this is where the torpedo will commence its search pattern so set the position as close to the suspected position of the submarine as possible.</P></BODY>

<P>Your frigate is equipped with anti-submarine rocket-launched torpedoes (ASROC) which have been temporarily disabled (they will be enabled when you are cleared to fire on your next target). The ASROC type are distinct from anti-submarine rockets like the RBU series employed on Soviet/Russian built ships, and are essentially a light-weight torpedo (LWT) attached to a booster rocket with a guidance system. The booster flies to the target and once in position the LWT is deployed and begins a search pattern. This is no different from dropping an LWT from a helicopter, and is an effective way to engage a submarine at arms-length if a helicopter is not available.</P>
<P>There is a (noisy, old) nuclear submarine operating at reference point (RP) Echo. It is constrained to be within 12nm of RP Echo, but this still gives us 452 square nautical miles to search!</P>
<P>Set a course to RP Echo and set your speed to flank. Ensure your sonar is set to passive to avoid giving away your presence as you transit.</P></BODY>

At a simple level, convergence zones are ring shaped areas surrounding a sonar receiver where sound can be detected as it travels in a curved path through water. Convergence zones only occur in deep water, and the distance between them varies according to environmental factors—as a general rule however, they are around 30nm apart.</P>
<P>Looking at our frigate with the ‘Underwater Sensors’ map setting on, we can see a shaded green circle representing the convergence zone. In some cases you may see multiple convergence zones, but in this case there is only one.</P>
<P>Since the submarine we're now hunting is armed and dangerous, we want to maximise the distance at which we detect it. The convergence zone effectively extends the range of our hull sonar, so to take advantage of this we should slow down so that our passive sonar is able to listen effectively.</P>
<P>We have quite a lot of area to cover, and a limited amount of time. To cover more ground, we can use sprint-drift movement. Open the speed and altitude dialog by pressing F2 and check the box titled 'Sprint and Drift', then move the speed slider to set your desired average speed at 12 knots. Your crew will then alternate between 'drifting' at creep speed to listen for contacts, and 'sprinting' at flank speed to cover ground. The duration of each sprint phase and drift  phase will depend on the desired average speed. This is a trade-off that sacrifices continuous sensor coverage for speed over ground.</P>
<P>Configure your ship to sprint and drift directly towards RP Echo; if you wish you may use active sonar to detect the target--but remember this will also give away your presence and location; and unlike the last one, this target is armed.</P></BODY>

<P>Your embarked ASW helicopter is now readying for action in our final serial. Ship-borne ASW helicopters can be broadly categorised as hunters, killers, and hunter-killers. Hunters are equipped with sensors that enable them to independently detect, track and identify submarines. Killers are equipped with weapons that enable them to destroy detected submarines. Hunter-killers are equipped with both sensors and weapons. Hunter-killers are by far the most common configuration for modern ASW aircraft, and pure hunter aircraft are almost unheard of since the late 1970's.</P>
<P>Let's take a look at the aircraft we have at our disposal. Open the Air Ops window by pressing F6 and click on the hyperlinked aircraft type to open its database entry. We've embarked a Lynx Mk300 that is equipped with radar, FLIR, ESM/ELINT, DECM and MAD. Of these sensors, the radar may catch an unlucky submarine at periscope depth, the ELINT may detect a careless submarine using its radar, the FLIR might detect a snorkelling diesel sub, and the MAD may pick up a relatively large submarine that is operating at shallow depth in deep water--none of these are exactly great situations to rely on for detecting a submarine in the expanses of the ocean.</P>
<P>Examining the equipped loadout reveals that our helicopter is also equipped with LWTs and a few active-only sonobuoys. Active-only sonobuoys have short range and can be easily detected (and therefore avoided) by submarines. They may be effective at scaring off a potential threat submarine, but they are not effective for area search.</P>
<P>Based on all of this, we can deduce that our embarked ASW helicopter is suited to the killer role. Its sensors are adequate to localise a contact detected by other platforms and it carries weapons to attack if the contact is deemed to be hostile. It does not, however, have sensors that are effective at area search. In our current situation--a lone surface ship with a killer-type ASW helicopter conducting open-water ASW--it is highly recommended that the helicopter be kept on deck until an underwater contact is detected by the surface ship. Once it is assessed that the contact is likely a submarine, the helicopter is launched to localise and destroy the probable submarine.</P>
<P>Plot a course to RP Foxtrot to the west, where another old, noisy nuclear attack submarine is on patrol. Manage your speed and sensors in order to detect the submarine operating within 12nm of RP Foxtrot. Leave your helicopter to continue readying for the moment--it will become available automatically when you need it.</P></BODY>

17/08/2020 00:00:01 - [Australia] <BODY scroll=auto><P>We are currently on station to the south of Pelee; HMAS Stuart has detached from the task group to complete a Naval Gunfire Support serial against shore targets on Pelee. HMAS Anzac has just completed a replenishment at sea (RAS, also known as underway replenishment--UNREP) with our high value unit (HVU) HMAS Sirius in preparation for transit of the Ceram Sea to RP Oscar.</P>
<P>Naval Gunfire Support (NGS) is often overlooked in the age of cruise missiles and air power, however naval gunfire has some advantages that missiles and aircraft lack. Aircraft and missiles are vulnerable to air defences, and while shells from naval gunfire can be countered with specialised systems they remain relatively uncommon and do not maintain their effectiveness well in the face of sustained attack.</P>
<P>Your frigates are equipped with Harpoon II cruise missiles which can be used against land targets or surface ships, and their MH-60R multi-role helicopters can also be fitted with Hellfire missiles to attack land and surface targets. The Harpoon IIs and Hellfires are limited in supply, with your frigates carrying 8 of each as standard. Ammunition for your 127mm guns on the other hand, is plentiful--with 300 rounds of high explosive point detonating (HE-PD) ammunition that is extremely well suited to NGS. You may recall from Basic Surface Operations 1.3 that HE-CVT ammunition is loaded by default to defend against unexpected air threats; assigning HE-PD ammunition to a target means the crew will automatically reload the desired ammunition before firing.</P>
<P>Select HMAS Stuart and use the manual attack order (Shift+F1) to assign 127mm/54 HE-PD shells to each target in the NGS Target Field on Pelee. You can allocate a fixed number of shots to each target in the target list by first selecting the firing unit then pressing Shift+F1 to order manual weapon assignment, drag-selecting the target contacts, then using Ctrl+Click or Shift+Click to select multiple targets in the target list, and finally entering a number in the "Allocate weapons to selected target(s)" field and clicking the associated button. Since we have 300 rounds of HE-PD ammunition and six targets, we can allocate 50 rounds to each target using that method. Once a target is destroyed, any weapons allocated but not yet fired are de-allocated and available for use on other targerts.</P> <P>Once you have allocated your 127mm HE-PD ammunition to the 6 targets on Pelee, start time by pressing Space or clicking 'Close &amp; Resume'.</P></BODY>

17/08/2020 00:35:40 - [Australia] <P>HMAS Stuart is replenishing fuel and munitions. While Stuart replenishes, lets form up Anzac on Sirius and start the Task Group moving towards RP Oscar.</P><p>Select HMAS Sirius and HMAS Anzac by drag-selecting both units, or selecting one and then adding another to the selection by shift-clicking. Press the G key to Group the selected units together. By default the ship with the largest displacement will be set as the group lead, which is suitable in most cases. To change the lead for a group, select the group and bring up the Formation Editor (F4), then select the desired lead unit and click 'Set Group Lead'. For this exercise, leave Sirius as the group lead.</p><p>The purpose of forming groups is to keep units in defined areas to support each other. In this situation we have an essentially defenceless HVU and two escorts; and we have three potential threat sources--air, surface and submarine. The surface threat is most likely to manifest as a cruise missile attack, so it makes sense to configure our defence to protect against submarines and air threats.</p><p>Ships in a group can be assigned stations, which can (and should) be configured to optimise their effectiveness. We will set HMAS Anzac as a picket and keep HMAS Stuart in close to Sirius for point defence once its RAS is complete. HMAS Sirius will set the pace of transit as the slowest unit. Lets assign HMAS Anzac a suitable station while Stuart completes their RAS.</p><p>Select the group and bring up the Formation Editor (F4), select HMAS Anzac from the list of units and click 'Set Station (Relative Bearing)'. Now click the map near the new reference point that has appeared 25nm ahead of HMAS Sirius to set the station for HMAS Anzac. This position is just outside the first convergence zone, and still just within the maximum range of the frigates air defences--providing an overlapping field of air defences immediately ahead of the HVU as well as screening well in advance for submarines. Because we have chosen a relative bearing, the station will move if HMAS Sirius changes course. This is useful on long straight transits, but can slow a task group down while units change stations if a lot of manouevring is conducted.</p><P>If you wish, you can change the station type to fixed bearing by selecting HMAS Anzac in the formation editor, and clicking 'Set Station (Fixed Bearing)'. It is recommended to set HMAS Anzac to sprint and drift by checking the 'Sprint and Drift' box in the Formation Editor. This means that Anzac will sprint and drift to keep pace with the lead unit while making the best use of its hull sonar.</P><p>Once you have assigned HMAS Anzac to its picket station, resume time by pressing Space or clicking 'Close & Resume'.</p>
